David Nabarro  a annoncé (enfin !) que la Russie devait jouer un role clé dans la lutte contre la grippe aviaire;

( les mois de mai et juin risquent d'être très rudes chez les russes)

Russia is to play a key role in the fight against bird flu, said senior coordinator of the UN Avian and Human Influenza System David Nabarro(...)

Minister of Agriculture Alexei Gordeyev held a meeting dedicated to the situation which has formed on the Russian poultry meat market in connection with the threat of bird flu proliferation. Russian businessmen have decided to reduce imports of poultry meat by 30% due to the spread of bird flu in the world, said minister Gordeyev. "A principal proposal has come in from the business community to self-restrict poultry meat imports by about 30%," the minister said based on the results of the meeting with Russian poultry market operators.

The bird flu virus has been found in samples taken from three wild ducks shot down in Rostov region.

April 7, 2006

A new bird flu outbreak has taken place in Khasavyurtovsky district of Dagestan. The poultry plant has been quarantined and all 28,000 birds have been culled. A total of 800,000 birds died in Dagestan from bird flu during the last epidemic.

Chief State Sanitary Inspector Gennady Onischenko expects a negative development of the bird flu situation in April-May. "In April-May we expect birds to fly into the Siberian and Urals areas. So we expect some negative changes in the situation," said Onischenko in State Duma corridors.

Speaking about the vaccine developed by the Novosibirsk Institute "Vector," Onischenko could not name the exact time when testing on volunteers would be completed. He says "a number of issues remain." "This is a vaccine of desperation," Onischenko said reminding that an efficient vaccine can be developed only when the bird flu epidemic begins.

April 4, 2006

Gennady Onischenko stated: information on bird flu should be thoroughly… concealed from the population. The Chief State Sanitary Inspector believes bird flu outbreaks do most likely take place in the USA but these facts are concealed… Because information on the infectious disease undermines the investment appeal of the country or the subject. It is appropriate to speak about the true state of things only amongst "close people," Onischenko said, meaning those present at the meeting. People should be given "thoroughly considered and non-alarming information such as ways to protect themselves from bird flu. It is quite possible that information will start to get censored soon because the Headquarters is beginning to think like Onischenko.
